Syko Friend – Cloudy Yellow Star Pollen
Sophie Weil’s Syko Friend is finally putting “Cloudy Yellow Star Pollen” on streaming platforms, and it’s been a long time coming. She recorded the song at the end of 2023, back when Nina Protocol was still running, and it only ever existed there. Now that the platform’s gone, this is the first real chance most people have had to hear it.
The song came together while Weil was still writing what became “Dizzy Magic” in 2025. She’s called it a devotional piece, and that tracks. It doesn’t have the shape of a single so much as something written for herself first. Evan Burrows produced and mastered it, same as he’s done elsewhere in her catalog, so the sonic thread to the album is intact even though this came first.
Calling it a companion piece undersells it a little. It’s more like a study for the album, written before the bigger picture existed. You can hear Weil working out the mood that would eventually fill out “Dizzy Magic,” just in a smaller, quieter room.
I like that it took this long to surface properly. Some songs need the right context before they make sense to anyone but the person who wrote them.
